Copenhagen – Søren Solkærs ‘Surface’ world tour

Danish photographer Søren Solkærs is one of the most leading photographers, and who has portrayed many of the most well-known street artists. He has been doing this since 2012 and has travelled to cities such as London, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Stavanger and Athens to meet these artists. On 12th June his Surface world tour strikes down in Copenhagen. ‘Surface’ shows 122 portraits in large formats.

It is very uncommon for a street artist to show his face on a photograph. Well, slowly it is getting more common, but there are still a few who prefer to stay anonymous. Søren Solkærs has portrayed 135 street artists in front of their own artworks. Some of these artists are hiding behind a mask or props to obscure their identity.

Six ‘Surface’ exhibitions have been announced for 2015, and four of them have already taken place. Exhibition number five is going to be held in Copenhagen, and it is also the largest out of six. This exhibition covers a 3.500 square meter area and features 122 portraits. The portraits will be hung in a network of “streets” – resembling walls of an imaginary city.

A lot of huge names have been portrayed by Søren Solkærs. This expansive collection includes Shepard Fairey, Blek Le Rat, The London Police, Seen, Ron English, Swoon, Faile, Space Invader and Vhils. Pretty amazing, yes? As you can see in the teaser below a lot of effort is being taken in taking these portraits. I especially like the way that all of these artists are portrayed just like their artworks or are blended in.

In the week leading up to the opening, six international and highly esteemed artists have been invited to create large-scale murals in Copenhagen. The artists are: Conor Harrington, ROA, Borondo, DALeast, Maya Hayuk and HuskMitNavn. They will all be producing murals in the Vesterbro area of Copenhagen that is also the home of the exhibition venue.

During the exhibition period a cinema is integrated in the exhibition-architecture, with daily screenings of historical and new films about some of the portrayed artists as well as screenings of the Danish documentary ‘A picture of Søren Solkær’, which describes the creation of ‘Surface’.
