Berlin – New location for Open Walls with Jordan Seiler and Vermibus
Urban art gallery Open Walls in Berlin is moving to a new location. Having lived at Gerichtstrasse for some time, they are now moving to Schröderstrasse in the centre of Berlin-Mitte. To celebrate the new gallery space there will be a grand opening on Friday 3rd July 2015 with an exhibition with the art of public art pioneer Jordan Seiler and art activist Vermibus.
Open Walls has gained a good reputation throughout the years for being a reliable force and forward-thinking platform for public art in Berlin. Moving to a new location is the next big step for the gallery. The new gallery space is equipped with the sustainability to not only escort the existing artist roster through its progression, but to embrace the opportunity to work together with new talents and increase its reach.
For the opening of their new gallery space Jordan Seiler and Vermibus exhibit their public art in a special show from 3rd July until 25th July. Jordan Seiler is going to be present at the opening for an introduction to ad-busting and public art. This duo show consciously sets a statement against the superficial surface of today’s commercialized cityscapes and the visual pollution of outdoor advertising.
While attending The Rhode Island School of Design in 2000 Jordan Seiler already started to challenge the relationship between public spaces and advertising. He named it PublicAdCampaign, for which he took over billboards to use them as canvas for his own artworks. His campaigns have grown from an individual art project to a collective work. It had a peak in the New York Street Advertising Takeover. More than 100 participants replaced ads with artworks. He has also launched a digital equivalent with an App titled NO AD. This app replaces NYC subway advertisement with curated artwork.
In November 2014 Jordan Seiler and Vermibus joined forces for the NO AD DAY. Activists from all over the world were asked to remove outdoor advertisings, leaving plain white display cases as signs of the elimination of the commercial media behind. For Berlin based Vermibus’ individual work it is the irritation of the common viewing habit that expresses his critique against the advertising industry. For example: he removes ads and transforms the high gloss bikini beauties into deformed beasts.
The grand opening show of Open Walls Gallery has a collection of recent works from both artists. It includes a multimedia segment by Seiler – as well as a photo series by Thomas von Wittich, taken from his “Dissolving Europe“ project, for which he followed Vermibus around the continent.
