Ostend – The Crystal Ship: a unique contemporary art festival
The Crystal Ship is a new festival in Ostend, a Belgian coasted city. From 26th March until 10th April an immense list of 20 artists created impressive mural artworks and installations throughout the city of Ostend.
Yes, the line-up of artists for The Crystal Ship’ first edition is quite a good one and one to be proud of. Are you ready to know who were there? Here you go: 1010, Agostino Iacurci, Cyrcle, Disorderline, Elian, Ella & Pitr, Eversiempre, Guido Van Helten, Fintan Magee, Jaune, Jaz, Mister Fiksit, Nuart presents: Biancoshock and Isaac Cordal, Pixelpancho, Pol Cosmo, Roa, Robert Montgomery, Siegfried Vynck, Smates & Locatelli and Zio Ziegler. I am sure this list of artists makes you just as excited as we are.
The Crystal Ship curator Bjørn Van Poucke is extremely enthusiastic about the collaboration with the city of Ostend. “Nowhere else in Europe have so many artists in this genre been brought together for a joint arts festival.” His mission with The Crystal Ship is to bring art to the people and that is exactly what they did. All artworks can be found right in the centre of the city, the place where people live and work. That is pretty unique!
The Crystal Ship has a few very outstanding artworks that without any doubt will make you say ‘Oh wow!’. They are painted on large murals, others on objects or are that small that you have to look for them high and low.
Argentinean artist Elian created a very mindfucking artwork that only makes sense if you stand on a certain position in front of the artwork. On a photo it will look like it was photoshopped. Nope, Elian is just a very clever talented artist. The artwork that Ella & Pitr painted can only be seen from high in the sky. They painted an image of a woman on the ground. So, when you are there on the ground it is impossible to see what has been painted. They did a similar artwork for Nuart in Stavanger (Norway).
We are a fan of Jaune’s miniature garbagemen artworks. He painted several of them in the city centre of Ostend. Can you find all of them? Belgian art hero ROA was also present in Ostend to create his iconic images of animals. His mural artwork is that of a stack of animals, including a rat, rabbit and hedgehog. Fintan Magee’s creation is also one that is just amazing. His artwork is on the side of a flat. On the top half you can see an image of a woman and the bottom half shows her puddle reflection.
This is just a selection of the great artworks that have been created over the course of 2 weeks.
We at Street Art Europe are looking forward giving Ostend a visit this Summer. In the mean time photographer Henrik Haven was there to capture the festival. Enjoy his extensive documentation and additional shots by Mark Rigney and Arne Deboosere.
