Amsterdam – Soren Solkaer’s SURFACE comes to Amsterdam
In the past two years Danish photographer Søren Solkær has toured the world with his ‘SURFACE’ show. He is one of the most leading photographers, and has portrayed many well-known street artists across the globe. This Autumn he is bringing ‘SURFACE’ to Amsterdam at the Vroom & Varossieau art gallery. This exclusive show runs from 9th september until 9th October 2016.
After two decades of mainly portraying the world’s leading musicians, Søren Solkær set out to do a large scale portrait project about individuals who create art in the public space. ‘SURFACE’ is the result of a three-year journey photographing in Athens, Berlin, Copenhagen, Las Vegas, London, Los Angeles, Melbourne, Miami, New York, Paris, Stavanger and Sydney.
It is very uncommon for a street artist to show his face on a photograph. Well, slowly it is getting more common, but there are still a few who prefer to stay anonymous. Søren Solkærs has portrayed 135 street artists in front of their own artworks. Some of these artists are hiding behind a mask or props to obscure their identity. ‘SURFACE’ has been created in Søren’s signature style drawing influence from cinema and painting. His use of artificial lighting on location and a strong element of storytelling, creates images with an atmosphere of hyperrealism – a sort of imaginary film stills.
‘SURFACE’ is also a fine art photography book. This monograph is Søren Solkær’s fourth publication. It is a 240-page hardcover coffee table book featuring portraits of 135 artists. The expansive collection includes Shepard Fairey, Blek le Rat, DabsMyla, Ron English, FAILE, Kaff-eine, The London Police, Niels Shoe Meulman, Seen, Swoon and Vhils amongst many.
During the opening this coming Friday, Søren Solkær will also sign his books. An extra good reason to come to the opening.
